Health Protection Scotland, Glasgow, Scotland, UKContact detailsDr Martin DonaghyHealth Protection Scotland Clifton House, Clifton Place Glasgow G3 7LN, Scotland, UK Tel +44 (0)141 300 1100 Fax +44 (0)141 300 1170 Description of the instituteHealth Protection Scotland (HPS) aims to work in partnership with others, to protect the Scottish population (5 million) from being exposed to hazards which damage their health and to limit any impact on health when such exposures cannot be avoided.Its remit is to strengthen, co-ordinate and assure health protection activity by carrying out surveillance, providing expert advice, ensuring an effective response to incidents, developing good practice and a competent workforce and taking forward a portfolio of research. HPS commissions the 12 national reference laboratories and liaises with them and the specialist diagnostic laboratories for the various communicable and non-communicable disease surveillance programmes that HPS undertakes. It works closely with the devolved government in Scotland, the Scottish Government (health being the responsibility of the Scottish Parliament). The organisation has good links with the Health Protection Agency in England and units elsewhere in the UK. HPS also has close links with public health professionals at local level, microbiologists, infection control nurses and many other professional groups. HPS is based in modern office accommodation at two sites in the centre of Glasgow and is part of the National Health Service in Scotland. Around 150 staff are employed, including medical, scientific, nursing, environmental, veterinary and statistical specialties. The work of HPS covers the following areas: Immunisation and Respiratory, Environmental Health, Travel Medicine, Gastrointestinal and Zoonoses, Healthcare Associated Infections (including HAI Surveillance, Infection Control, Anti-Microbial Resistance and Decontamination), and Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmitted Infections. Training opportunitiesThe Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the unit's work, including design and evaluation of new and existing surveillance systems, data analysis and interpretation, investigation and management of infectious and environmental incidents, development of policies, teaching and research.
