Public Health Authority of the Slovac RepublicContact personMargareta Sláciková M.D.Section of Epidemiology Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic Trnavská 52 826 45 Bratislava, Slovak Republic Tel: + 421 2 492 843 28 Description of the instituteThe Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic (PHA SR) has been fulfilling the role of the executive body of Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic in the field of public health. The Authority's operations cover the whole territory of the Slovak Republic. The scope of the activities of the PHA SR includes care of specialised activities connected with health protection in the fields of environmental hygiene, hygiene of children and young people, nutritional hygiene, preventive occupational medicine, health protection against ionising radiation, epidemiology, medical microbiology, education to health, and health statistics.A compact part of the PHA SR in Bratislava are National Reference Centres (NRCs) as highly specialised sites providing complete epidemiological and laboratory surveillance of selected infectious diseases at the national level. They usually consist off epidemiological and laboratory parts. Epidemiological part of NRCs, which is formed by staff of the Section of Epidemiology, acquires, processes, analyses and evaluates epidemiological data about monitored communicable diseases (CD) and tightly co-operates with National Register of communicable diseases (NRCD) located in the Regional Public Health Authority in Banská Bystrica. Laboratory part processes clinical material, carries out confirmative examination for microbiological laboratories and methodically co-ordinates these laboratories. There is the NRC for salmonellosis, NRC for influenza and influenza-like diseases, NRC for poliomyelitis, NRC for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), NRC for meningococcal invasive diseases and NRC for resistance to antibiotics in the PHA SR. NRC staff co-operates widely on the international level, namely with the WHO and EU networks. Training opportunitiesThe trainee can be based in the Section of Epidemiology (SE), which is a relatively small section of PHA SR consisting from 19 workers. The priority tasks of the SE include epidemiological surveillance and control of CD and co-ordination of the immunisation programme in the Slovak Republic what is provided for in narrow co-operation with epidemiologists of 36 Regional Public Health Authorities (RPHAs) and with NRCs. In national level (PHA SR) the trainee can be involved to the tasks in the frame of the Immunisation Programme, to the tasks of the surveillance and control of influenza, salmonellosis, polio, meningococcal invasive diseases, AIDS/HIV and some other infections.
