EPIET Alumni Network
Background
The EPIET Alumni Network (EAN) was created to help develop and maintain a network of European public health epidemiologists that have participated in the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET) or other European Field Epidemiology Training Programmes (FETP).
Objectives
The EAN aims to be a resource for EPIET and for European public health with the objectives to:
-
Assist in the maintenance and development of contacts between members to create strong integration within and between past and current European EPIET and FETP cohorts of fellows.
-
Share and exchange professional experiences, information and skills among members.
-
Constitute and enable access to a pool of expertise of trained European field epidemiologists, who can provide epidemiological and public health expertise for members, their organisations, and other public and private organisations.
-
Take part and assist in the promotion, development and delivery of training in field epidemiology and public health.
-
Assist at European field epidemiology meetings such as the EPIET Scientific Seminar.
-
Provide support at local level to European EPIET and FETP fellows, including practical and technical assistance (in a complementary manner without interference with supervision) and including mentoring where appropriate.
Membership
The EAN is composed of active members defined as those who are paying the annual subscription and who are meeting the conditions for membership
a. Founding members defined as members of the first Advisory Board who established the association.
b. Past European EPIET and FETP fellows, and current European EPIET and FETP fellows are offered membership to the EAN.
c. Other individuals whose roles have the same goals as the EAN can join the association if proposed and seconded by two active members of the EAN. The proposal needs to be approved by a two-third majority of the Advisory Board. Such members should make up no more than 10% of the active EAN members.
Applications for admission should be written and addressed to the President of the EAN, who will submit them to the Advisory Board members' vote within three months of receipt.

EAN training modules
Building on the EAN's objectives, the network is active in providing a series of training modules run by members for members aimed at updating knowledge and skills in intervention epidemiology, and also to allow members to stay actively in contact with each other. So far, three modules have been organised, the fourth on is being planned for 2006.
New survey and research methods, Madrid, October 2002
A two-day module hosted at the NationalInstitute. The module covered new research areas applicable to public health such as case-case analysis, decision analysis and lot quality sampling (LQAS).
Early warning,Syndromic Surveillance and Prioritisation, Lyon, February 2004
A two-day module hosted at the WHO Office in Lyon that covered the latest developments around methods for early warning systems, syndromic surveillance and prioritisation.
Training the trainers, Stockholm, April 2005
This two-day module was hosted and supported by the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet "SMI") in Stockholm. It aimed to provide trainers and potential trainers with a package of tools to be used in training at different levels and for different purposes. Also, the module aimed to initiate/promote futureToT activities in Europe (i.e. working groups, future modules, learing groups etc.). During the module a total of 13 participants from seven European countries received training on: assessing training needs, defining competencies and training objectives; designing a course and various training techniques.
